Dogo Argentino Health Issues and How to Prevent Them

Big Dog | November 30th, 2011

The Dogo Argentino is a dog breed that is ultimately healthy; this will only necessitate very few health related visits to the veterinarian clinic. But don’t be too complacent for just like the other breeds, Dogo Argentino comes with one or two health issues that will rise up in from time to time. So, do whatever it is that is required for the prevention of the said probable medical problems.

Dogo Argentino

The number one health issue of this breed is the deafness, this is usually innate and it may be unilateral of bilateral. Make sure that you purchase a Dogo Argentino from respectable breeders for reputable ones have the puppy checked and tested with Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response to know whether or not the puppy is able to hear or not. This test is only performed by a qualified veterinarian with experience and skills in using the machines to be sure that the result is accurate. Dogo Argenitino, can still be a good and fun pet even with deafness, especially the unilateral one.

Dogo Argentino is also predisposed to hip dysplasia for the reason the it is a huge breed of dog of mastiff stock and just like the other big dogs they can possibly develop dysplastic joints, specifically the hips. This happens when the head of femur is does the fit the hip socket properly thus causing joint instability. If this is not diagnosed and treated early it can lead to degenerative joint disease and result to heightened pain and soon immobility. To avoid this to happen pay special attention to the food you feed your dog, the diet should have the necessary element like glucosamine and chondroitin and most especially Ester Vitamin C to prop up a very healthy joint. Veterinarians suggest the Dogo Argentino owner to administer 500 milligrams of Ester Vit C to puppies and 1000 milligrams to an adult dog, as per daily basis.

The most famous Dogo Argentino

Big Dog | March 8th, 2011

The most famous appearance of this breed was in the movie Bombón (El Perro). The story of this movie is simple, effective, humorous and gripping. The main character, Coco, is a skilled craftsmen, who tries to sell knives to oil workers, but nobody buys from him. Finally he decides to give two away for free. It is obvious that he is out of luck. He lives in a poorish apartment with his daughter and her kids. Otherwise, Coco is a good natured man and he helps a woman whose car broke down.

Somebody sees his courageous act and he is given a Dogo Argentino dog. Coco believes that the dog’s name is “Lechien” because it was written on his kennel, but this just means “the dog” in French. In the end he understand that actually the dog’s name is Bombón. Soon afterward his luck is unpredictably changed  for the better. They go through together crazy adventures and they end up winning the first prize at the local dog show.

In this film we can see that the Dogo Argentino is a very good protector of you or your home and is very intelligent and courageous.

Is a Dogo Argentino a good choice for me?

Big Dog | October 25th, 2010

If you would like to have a dog that is very intelligent, courageous and can be an excellent guarder of your home, then Dogo Argentino is the right breed for you. But it is very important to keep in mind that this dog is over dominant, so they are not advised to a novice dog owner. If this dog is raised with other dogs and pets, they can get on well. Because of its energy and lively temperament, never let them alone with smaller children.

The coat of Dogo Argentino is short, soft and thick; therefore it requires at least a weekly brushing. The breed is healthy, only some of them are prone to health issues like hip dysplasia or deafness.

Early socialization and obedience training is a must for this dog, otherwise it cannot be handled easily. Training is not a hard job, as the dog is highly intelligent, but it must be done with respect, consistency and firmness, with loads of reward. These dogs excel in guarding or police work.

All in all, I would advise these dogs only to experienced dog owners, who will be able to provide the basic needs and necessary training for the dog, as well as much exercise and a big, fenced yard.

I hope this short article about the Dogo Argentino will provide you enough information to decide whether this breed is the right on for you.

About the history of Dogo Argentino

Big Dog | September 9th, 2010

As mentioned before, Dogo Argentino was bred to create a dog, which is not only an excellent guard dog, but also a fearless fighter. (Dog fights were very popular at these times).

The breed was born in 1928 and fulfilled the wishes. However, it got a quite bad reputation among certain people, as it is said to be excessively aggressive. It is even banned in a anumber of coutries, including Great Britain and Australia.

The breed was recognized in Argentina 1964 and it is an accepted breed by FCI since 1973.

Argentino Dogo – Only from Argentina?

Big Dog | August 25th, 2010

Not at all. The name refers to Argentina, because the two brothers who created the breed were from this country. Their dream was to create a breed for big game, to create a breed which is not only powerful and protective, but also a loyal family pet.
The base of the breeding started with the Fighting Dog of Cordoba, but they also used the following breeds to increase good skills: Pointer, Boxer, Great Dane, Bulldog, Irish Wolfhound, Dogue de Bordeaux, Great Pyrenees, Spanish Mastiff.
The results speaks for itself..

Are Dogo Argentinos prone to deafness?

Big Dog | July 22nd, 2010

It is known that white-coated dogs are prone to deafness, so what’s up with Dogos? This white coated breed can’t be an example – 10% of these pups born with some kind of deafness. The deafness can be unilateral or bilateral – in case of unilateral deafness the pup is deaf to only one ear, in the case of bilateral, for both.
Before you buy a puppy, make sure the parents are not deaf, and that the breeder had him/her B.A.E.R. tested. However, these dogs are able to live a happy life, even if they are deaf, if they are properly cared for.
