Are Dogo Argentinos prone to deafness?

Big Dog | July 22nd, 2010

It is known that white-coated dogs are prone to deafness, so what’s up with Dogos? This white coated breed can’t be an example – 10% of these pups born with some kind of deafness. The deafness can be unilateral or bilateral – in case of unilateral deafness the pup is deaf to only one ear, in the case of bilateral, for both.
Before you buy a puppy, make sure the parents are not deaf, and that the breeder had him/her B.A.E.R. tested. However, these dogs are able to live a happy life, even if they are deaf, if they are properly cared for.

  1. Hi, I have a DA and she\’s the best pet I ever had. Regarding deafness, it is genetically possible due to the fact that they are albino. However, only a very small percentage of them has this problem. Responsible breeders don\’t extend the bloodline of dogs with this problem, but of course there\’s always someone who does. The best way to prove your dog won\’t have any of these issues is by choosing one who is well pigmented. Although I have a too pink dog, she has pigmented well in time and she had well pigmented puppies due to the male dog i chose. If you want, I can give you lots of information about them.
